Summer 2008 Children’s Summer Education Internship
Summer interns will work closely with the Clayworks Children’s Coordinator in a variety of aspects, within our summer children’s classes. All summer camp classes will take place in our studio building, in Mt. Washington. This unpaid internship position will incorporate any of the following: working directly with children, assisting teachers in their classes, providing glaze/technical assistance to teachers, administrative duties related to the children’s program, organizing art materials, and providing follow-up of finished children’s work. Summer camp classes provide a wonderful opportunity to become involved in the many exciting facets of Baltimore Clayworks’ education program.
Examples of Intern Opportunities:
Gallery/Exhibition/Front Desk Assistant
This position will assist in general administrative jobs such as answering the phone, working as registrar for Clayworks’ education program as well as sales operation in our gallery. The interns will learn about how to manage sales from both gallery and classroom, how to maintain the gallery and general customer service to the public. The Interns will also assist our Exhibition Director with installing and uninstalling the exhibitions we host in our main exhibitions gallery. We have opportunities for interns with an outgoing, patient and cheerful disposition.
Special Events Assistant
Special Events Assistant would work with the Events and Volunteer Coordinator and the Marketing Coordinator to coordinate the logistics, publicity, marketing and invitation lists and mailings to promote key events for Baltimore Clayworks such as a festival in June and Gala in October. The intern would help write press releases, solicit auction items, coordinate applications for sponsorships and develop mailing lists to attract new audiences to Baltimore Clayworks. This position will be a great opportunity for a student with excellent written and oral communication skills who is interested in leaning more about non-profit management.
Teaching Assistants
Clayworks has opportunities for interns at our community arts satellite studio in the Forrest Park Senior/Community Center and possibly in other community-based sites. Clayworks has been offering after-school programs for youth as well as senior adult. With the generous support from the A-Teams Initiative of the Family League of Baltimore, we have Middle and High School Aged Youth programs. Under the supervision of experienced teachers, the intern will assist the classroom management where children are learning lessons about art, life, community, patience, individuality, teamwork, creativity, pride, and respect. This is an excellent opportunity for Education, Child Development, Urban Development, Cultural studies, Art, and Psychology majors interested in children and clay. Responsibilities will include helping prepare clay for class and working one on one with the children offering encouragement and guidance.
Glaze Technician
Baltimore Clayworks has a great opportunity for a student who is interested in developing management skills through working as a glaze technician for our classroom.
The student will be responsible for managing and monitoring weekly usage and mixing of all classroom cone 10 glazes, slips and washes. The Glaze Technician would work with a crew of 4 to 6 work exchange students to do the physical mixing as glazes are needed. Tasks would involve checking glaze/slip/wash levels every 3 days. As glazes become low the tech and work exchange students need to mix and sieve a fresh 5 gallon bucket of glaze.
Student must be self motivated, punctual, detail oriented and capable of lifting 5 gallon bucket of glaze. Access to e-mail is required to communicate with Matt Hyleck, Educational Coordinator, directly as well as contacting our work-exchange students.
This is not an opportunity for glaze testing. The internship would develop management skills combined with a fair amount of physical labor. No kiln loading/firing is required.
