Leigh Taylor Mickelson
June 23–July 28, 2007
As an living and working artist in New York, Leigh Taylor Mickelson paired nicely with North Meets South. Her organic and modular sculptures pushed the monumental scale of the show space and introduced a real sensitivity to gender. Leigh handbuilds gourd, organ, and floral shaped objects that are assembled onto a metal structure to appear totem-like. In addition to the free-standing sculptures, Leigh explored a fresh perspective of gender roles, using a pistol as a visual vocabulary.
