The exhibition Couplets explores the studio energy between artists who share a space and the artwork from that collaboration. A dynamic show of over 20 pairs of artists that illustrates the talent and enthusiasm in the realm of ceramic art and the synergy of a communal studio.

These partnerships may be domestic or creative; married couples, friends or family. Their studio environment may have one person throwing and the other decorating or just working separately under one roof. The resulting work may be a singular voice or two diverse styles that are united in dedication and passion for clay.

Matt and Shoko work extensively with slabs humped over bisque molds, wrapped around vertical molds, and stacked on multiple piece bisque molds. They will demonstrate techniques developed over the last ten years on a series of forms including oval bowls, trenchers, flower plates, and sculptural birds. Pounding and tossing slabs, building parts, slip application, shaving, and carving will all lead up to a discussion of surface embellishment and idea development for sgraffito decoration.

Each participant will create a small piece from a bisque mold. Then carry their ideas through to a finished piece using the demonstrated techniques. Surface design will be emphasized using an e-xacto knife for sgraffito decoration.
