Visions, Symbols and Dreams of Harriet Tubman
Community artist Mike Alewitz
2005
Baltimore Clayworks hosted artist Mike Alewitz of New Jersey for six months in 2000. During that time he worked along side other Clayworks artists with communities in Baltimore City, Howard County, Prince Georges County, and Somerset County on a project entitled “Visions, Symbols and Dreams of Harriet Tubman.” The artwork in this project reflected Alewitz’s style of imagery described as magical realism, agitprop, and social realism. He employed dreamlike combinations of magical figures, symbols and backgrounds with the lush use of color. The pieces became “monuments” and gave expression to the surreal and mystic vision of Harriet Tubman. Alewitz also considered images and symbols of communication and technology of the 21st century for part of the artwork. The monuments “fit” together and function as one piece, even though they were set in different locations along the trails and architecture identified as part of The Underground Railroad.
