Discovering Community: The History of East Baltimore
Dunbar Middle School and artist Herb Massie
2003–2004
In 2003-2004 Mr. Massie was the lead artist on a project called “Discovering Community: The History of East Baltimore” at Dunbar Middle School in Baltimore. This was an 18 month project in which he worked with students of Dunbar to discover the history of the neighborhood in which they live and depict it through a 5-panel mural in clay and mosaic. These panels have images depicting themes of civil rights, equality, freedom, and show the streets and places in the neighborhood of personal significance. This project was funded through the MetLife Foundation and is on permanent display in the entrance to the school.
