In this 6-week course students will be introduced to Japanese Haniwa guardian figure sculpting. Haniwa Figures originally were created between the 4th and 6th Century A.D. during the Kofun period in Japan. They depict guardian animals, human figures and architecture. Used in rites of passage these sculptures adorn burial mounds to commemorate an individual’s life, family or natural surroundings. Students will use this historical context as inspiration to construct a series of these sculptures using traditional hand-building techniques. All skill levels are welcome.
