Artist Statement
I sculpt the felt body as much as the seen body. The contours of my figures are defined by feelings of movement and pose, internal sensations of lengthening and folding, tension and compression. These sculptures have been influenced by dance and the idea of a moving, transforming body. Japanese art and performance have contributed to my most recent work, which emphasizes contortion and facial expressiveness. All of my figures are characters and performers. They act out emotional states and desires, whether for an imagined audience or for their own catharsis. I am particularly interested in presenting humans as animals and animals as humans. I want to acknowledge our own animal bodies and desires. I am also curious how animals function as psychological allegories. My favorite themes are hope, fury and ecstasy.
