Artist’s Statement

I started out working in clay. Then the fragility of the medium became an issue and I moved on to welded steel and cast bronze. Since coming to work for Baltimore Clayworks, I have begun re-examining my relationship with clay.

The imagery comes from close examination of nature. I abstract from those studies and use the natural, yet surreal, imagery as a metaphor the human experience and condition. The work may represent life cycles as well as the dichotomy of the humorous with the macabre.

Artists considered an influence: Eva Hesse, Robert Arneson, Niki de St. Phalle, Louise Bourgeois, Alice Neel, and more.

Color is critical. It is integral to the creation of the work not a separate stage I am always evaluating where color will accentuate the form as I work.
