Joe Vitek Artist's Statement As my artistic statement, I would say that I strive for attention to detail as a craftsman, based on historical models rather than contemporary style oriented, narcissistic and incestuous models of ceramic craft. My goal is to present a product that will survive many generations into the future, and will still be well loved and revered by its future owners. A statement often repeated to my students is to be aware of the last thing they do to the wet clay, as this is the mark that will survive 10,000 years. The Slovak National Museum in Bratislava contains the Venus of Moravny, which belongs to the European Upper Paleolithic Era, and is 22,800 years old. My forbearers came from this region and I like to think an early ancestor of mine lovingly crafted that work.
