Myung Rye Kim

Baltimore , Maryland – May 1st, 2008 –Baltimore Clayworks features our Lormina Salter Fellow, Myung Rye Kim with the exhibition Journey of the Magnolia. This exhibition runs from June 28 th through August 2nd, 2008 with an opening reception on Saturday, June 28th, from 6 to 8 pm. Admission is free.

Myung Rye Kim has an M.F.A from Kookmin University in Seoul, Korea and from the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence. Her work has been exhibited nationally as well as internationally in Korea, Japan, New Zealand, Russia and Turkey. On display in our gallery will be sculptural and functional works that draw inspiration from botanical forms as well as furniture and home accessories. Hand-built with porcelain and iron-rich clay, she celebrates the intricate beauty of nature and the memories attached.

“I am interested in spectrum of memory as a metaphor for change in my circumstances. I am exploring a lot of different slices of memories that are contained in my works. I have always been interested in bringing clay into our living spaces and now my work is doing this in a more abstract way. For some time I have been intrigued by the idea of the “Total Work of Art” as a creative synthesis with the environment. The term used to describe this is the “Gesamthkunstwerk. My studio pursuit considers a deep expression of metaphor and symbol through using the magnolia, bamboo, window and stamen. My works are influenced by the nature of shape, form and space. I work to represent the aspects of fragmented memory in my work.”

Terra Incognita

Baltimore Clayworks is pleased to exhibit Terra Incognita: Unknown Land which will feature installation and sculptural work that map the interior and exterior landscape. Terra Incognita: Unknown Land runs from March 1 through April 18, 2008 with an opening reception on Saturday, March 1st, from 6 to 8 pm. Admission is free.

Rebecca HarveyRebecca Harvey, curator and a professor at Ohio State University, states: “What makes a map? In its simplest definition a map is the recording of one sort of information at the cost of others. A map is an abstraction in the extreme, a representation of information stripped of the extraneous. We live in the age of maps; we map roads and weather systems, geopolitical boundaries and nerve systems. I am interested in looking at the work of these artists in terms of mapping, in expanding the definition to include the abstraction of form and meaning, in a stripping away to uncover meaning. Can a map be a line, a pattern, a series of objects? How do we map the unknown?”

Invited artists include: Dylan Beck (PA), Tim Berg (LA), Margaret Boozer (MD), Myung Jin Choi (PA), Naomi Cleary (PA), Guy Michael Davis (OH), Trevor Dunn (UT), Edith Garcia (UK), Holly Hanessian (FL), Rebecca Harvey (OH), Jill Oberman (MT), Forrest Snyder (MD), Steve Thurston (OH), June Woest (TX).

Shalene Valenzuela's “If the Shoe Fits- Happy Homemaker”Curator Notkin states, “I intend to choose artists who interpret the theme in a wide variety of ways, from purely abstract works to highly narrative pieces, often charged with social/political commentary – imagine that. The theme is not simply about the color red – as in copper red glazes or some commercial cone 06 oxidation bright red – as I am seeking more “red meat” for this exhibition.

Ilena Finocchi's “My own worst enemy series”Tip Toland's “Dive”

So, this isn’t just about color. It’s about feeling as well as seeing red, it’s about the liquid of life and the liquid of death, it’s about leftist politics and it’s about courage and it’s about Christmas – in a Santa Claus sort of way. It’s also about one third of the American flag and nearly all of the Chinese flag, and finally, it’s about empire and it’s about hell. The parameters are wide open. Interpret it as you will, as I know you will, in your own unique way.”

Chris GustinCurator states, “My interest in curating a wood fired exhibition centers on the idea that the type of wood kiln we use is a choice that artists make that affects the completion of their ideas. There are numerous types of wood kilns in use today, each satisfying specific aesthetic needs of the artist. chose a group of people who feel are doing some outstanding work, work that meshes beautifully with the artists choice of firing methodology and kiln type. want this exhibition to highlight the artists work, as well as the reasoning behind the aesthetic. Why this kiln, why this method? What are you looking for in the firing and why have you chosen this type of kiln to realize your ideas? These are questions that speak to a deeper understanding of how we think, and in extension, how our work expresses those ideas.”
