Scriptorium: A room in a religious house set aside for the copying of manuscripts.
“Baltimore Clayworks was founded in 1980 in a de-commissioned library. I enjoyed the idea that my old corner studio space was once home to stacks and piles of books. My current corner studio, in the new addition, overlooks the Gallery Building, which was once a convent. Melding the architectural history of the places that occupy my life, Scriptorium is a meaningful title for my show.
I have strong and happy memories of going to the library with my father. I was left to wander the shelves, feeling independent, but always knowing that I could find my dad, if needed, in the Westerns, near the “L”s. The smells and silence were comforting, being surrounded by all those stories and lives and knowledge was exhilarating. Taking responsibility for borrowing a book, handing over your card as a pledge, is still a remarkable ritual.
When you lose someone important and close to you, they say it is like a library burning down. I am attempting to rebuild one.”
In conjunction with this exhibition, Baltimore Clayworks will hold a book drive to support literacy programming in Baltimore. Please bring in gently used books for donation.
Thank You!!!
Thank you to the Clayworks Community for making the Scriptorium book drive a huge (and heavy) success! We collected hundreds of book that will go to the Baltimore Reads Book Bank to benefit literacy programming in Baltimore. Literacy and education are the keys to making our community stronger and more vibrant and your generosity will make Charm City even more charismatic.
