Baltimore Clayworks is proud to be presenting Ceramic Sutra, a book-themed exhibition of ceramic sculpture and installation juried by Novie Trump. This exhibition runs January 14th – February 26th,  2012 with an opening reception on Saturday, January 14th, from 6 to 8 pm. Admission is free.

As a special treat, The Ivy Bookshop will featured at the opening. This well loved Mt. Washington bookshop changed ownership, new proprietors, Ann and Ed Berlin, will be at the opening along with key staff members. We will have a special area set aside with a display of ceramic art books and information about The Ivy Bookshop and their upcoming events. A raffle and special offers will be available to gallery visitors during the reception and throughout the exhibition which runs January 14 - February 26.

We will be collecting gently used books during the run of the show to benefit the Baltimore Reads Book Bank.  To help you clear your shelves and make room for new literary works, The Ivy Bookshop will have 10% off vouchers available at Baltimore Clayworks.  Please bring your donation to the Ceramic Sutra exhibition.

Juror’s Statement
The books we read inspire us as artists, they infiltrate and infuse our world and the stories we tell. In art the concept of the book can serve as the object, the decorative motif and be used as the narrative foundation. Books can influence the aesthetics of a work, becoming the visual metaphor or stage for our own stories to unfold.

Artist books in the contemporary art world expand on the traditional notion of what makes a book a book. Is it the form: a spine with two covers holding pages within? Is it the presence of words, written on paper pages? Is it merely the conveyance of an idea?  Artists are invited to interpret, redefine and/or challenge the definition of the book for this exhibition.
