Join artists, Bernadette and Krista in this unique team taught workshop as they share their techniques and thoughtful approach to clay by transforming simple shapes into animal and human forms. Through group and individual investigations, students will experiment with both thrown and hand-built parts, using them in more innovative ways for building. Emphasis will be on techniques such as cutting and folding soft slabs, coiling, paddling, and pushing the clay. Particular attention will be made to surface texture and drawing. This hands-on class will allow for both functional and sculptural solutions. Lively dialogue, slides, and demonstrations will accompany this dynamic duo.

Ornately Functional: Form & Surface
October 4–5, 10:00AM–4:00pm
This workshop focuses on utilizing wheel-thrown and hand-built parts in building forms (flower vessels, teapots, boxes, cups and more) that are then enhanced with surface detail. The integration of ornamentation with these defined forms completes a detailed yet functional piece. Demonstrations include altering and building off the wheel, darting, slip-decorating, stamp-making and stamping. We will discuss aesthetics and proportion, timing in clay, idea-generation, and progressing one’s own work with learned techniques.

She will employ how to animate gesture, the anatomy of expression, nuances to imply a narrative as well as describing characteristics of aging in clay.
