Out of the Box
July 8-22, 2006
Work by middle and high school students in our A-Teams program.
Baltimore Clayworks is a recipient of an A-Teams grant through the Family League of Baltimore, which enables us to offer four consecutive 8-week ceramic classes for middle and high school students at our Mondawmin Mall Satellite Studio. Co-taught by Herb Massie and Rachel Robinson, and assisted by Gina Watkins, Out of the Box is a show of work from our third session, in which students made slab boxes.
Through this challenging project the students were able to pull together the skills learned in the past two sessions, such as attaching and additive and subtractive techniques in creating their own unique slab box. They have also developed artistically, making significant aesthetic choices in regards to interior vs. exterior space, color choice and glazing. This project took a good deal of patience and perseverance to complete, but the results were well worth it. Feel free to gently look inside and see what you find!
Be sure to catch the next show opening on the July 29th, Seeds of Potential. A Clayworks-wide community arts project.
