A Dwelling of Infinite Brightness: A Workshop with Chih-Chi Hsu In this weekend hands-on workshop, Taiwanese visiting artist Chih-Chi Hsu will entice participants to explore and construct organic forms. She will demonstrate how she begins hand-building a form using pinch method coupled with small flattened coils on the interior and exterior of the form to create chambers and linear rhythms. Her methodical construction method creates organic forms that are lightweight and complex.

“Over my pure belief in life, and my questioning of social value systems, I respond through the way of labor by creation. The speed and reality of opening and consuming this world - - I attempt to find a purity and value that has been ignored; a beauty left behind in life. Sense organs and intuition are used to break the powerful and rational boundary of thinking as well as the habitual standard of single value. The flowing space is used to take in, bear and digest moods while exploring the possible outlines of reality; the truth of zero gravity.”

Hsu, Chih-Chi arrived in Baltimore in February 2009. Through the Taiwanese Artist Exchange Program at Baltimore Clayworks, she has created a body of sculptural work which was exhibited on-site in June/July of this year. Chih-Chi holds her MFA from Tainan National University of the Arts and a BA from Hsin-Chu Teachers College in Taiwan. She was a visiting artist at University of Missouri in Columbia and European Ceramic Work Centre in the Netherlands. She has received many awards for her sculpture and exhibitions internationally.
