Slips, Sigs and Surface: Textural Finishes for Sculpture and Pottery
This hand building class will use a variety of techniques including pinching, coiling, and slab building to create both sculptural and functional forms. Classroom demonstrations will focus on the exploration of surface and texture. Student will be encouraged to use stamps, rollers, carving, sgraffito, and mishima to create a variety of surfaces. Exploration of slips, stains, terra sigillatta, pit and saggar firing will introduce an approach to surface that deviates from the traditional use of high fire clay and glaze. Students should anticipate a 4-week design and production cycle for each surface and temperature treatment. This course is for students with some previous clay experience looking to explore surface and form. Course fee includes 25 lbs. of clay and bisque firing.
