rel·i·quar·y: a container or shrine where relics or other precious objects are kept
In this hands-on workshop students will use personal imagery to create a precious object from porcelain and a reliquary to house it. Niches, doorways and windows will be used to alternately hide and reveal inner treasures. The incorporation of engraved glass panels, metal and found objects will also be explored in this energetic two-day workshop.
Basic handbuilding techniques will be utilized as well as mark making and carving to help develop surface and narrative. The layering of glazes, slips, stains and oxides to achieve weathered antique surfaces in cone six oxidation firing will be shared, along with glaze recipes.
Students will also learn about etching text on glass and metal, incorporating metal into fired works, types of glues and their uses, no-fail hanging methods for wall works and professional development of their art practice.
Please bring to class 2-3 items of personal significance to you and a willingness to explore.
Prerequisite: All levels welcome.
