This workshop will explore the human head using hand-building techniques. By combining coil, modeling and slab, the head will be constructed. Through out the building process, students will be encouraged to add, subtract and push from the interior wall of the form to provide the information desired. Detailed measurements for the correct placement of facial features will be demonstrated. After basic construction, students will be encouraged to personalize the head by using incise lines, carving, and found object impressions. Also at this time, we will explore ways to use symbols or narratives which could be attachments, carved areas, or painted (under-glaze) sections on the clay. Other surface decoration will be explored on wet clay by using slips, under-glazes, and dry clays.
